Reading through the BRW today I stumbled onto page 43, talking about mobile technology, and was super impressed with the SlingBox.
SIMILAR: see www.orb.com
Sadly, I did race home to write about it!
What is it?
Well, it is a set top box, that connects & controls up to 4 other media devices, and then streams the media/programme/content of your choice to your laptop or mobile phone!
What does that mean? It (slingbox) sits & home, your laptop or mobile phone dials in as a browser, and you can play/review/control any media as if you were in your living room.
Check out the links it is great! The software installed on your pc/phone talks to the box, and allows you to review, control the attached devices, the media is then sent via the box (streamed), over the internet to your internet connected pc/fone anywhere in the world!!!
Check out the interview which covers the ability to upload & share User Generated Content in the new software currently being developed, the business model, emerging uses and the products support from CBS.
The article also mentioned the 3 mobile in the UK is already offering certain phone customers access to 80 hours per month of their own content using the Slingbox system.
It also raises a good point about the investment that carriers have been making to broadcast exclusive channels & content. For instance, you could watch the free cricket streaming from channel 9 instead of the premium paid Foxtel service provided by the Telstra Next G network…V interesting!
Anyways US$280.00 should get you fully geared up! You can check the exchange rate here.
Make sure you check out the demonstration videos of it at work!!!!!
Slingbox CEO blake watches the Daily Show recorded on his TiVo in the US streamed to his hotel room laptop in Japan & later catches the NFL game while at a boring play!
I wonder what the wife thinks!
Bloody great gadget!
